Daryl Hall, one-half of the R&B duo Hall & Oates, recently underwent major surgery.
“Hi everybody! I thought you should know that I recently received a kidney transplant from a very kind and generous living donor,” Hall, 79, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, June 23, revealing he is on the road to recovery. “It happened a couple of weeks ago, and I’m already starting to feel better. It was, according to my doctors, a complete success!”
The vocalist added that he “should be back to normal in a few months” and teased “more music” and shows to come.
Hall, who formed Hall & Oates with John Oates in 1970, has a history of health struggles. He was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2006, which forced him to cancel several tour dates.
“I have good days and bad days,” he told Sea Coast Online in 2008. “I was fine for four months, then I might have tremors, headaches, fatigue. It’s like a roving street gang of germs. There’s no cure, but you can control it.”
Hall added, “It manifests in so many ways. It can lead to heart disease, depression. It can be so serious that people have died. It’s a battle.”
Lyme disease is a chronic illness typically spread by the bite of a tick carrying the disease, according to Mayo Clinic. Symptoms often appear in stages, with early symptoms including a rash, headache, joint stiffness, extreme fatigue, muscle aches and swollen lymph nodes. It can eventually progress to include arthritis and damage to tissue or joints.
Hall & Oates rose to fame in the mid-70s with Billboard hits including “Rich Girl,” “Private Eyes” and “Maneater.” However, the duo hit a roadblock in 2023 when Hall requested a restraining order and filed a lawsuit against Oates, 78, over “the ground rules of who can sing what as a solo artist, along with money issues.” He accused his former musical partner of “betrayal” after Oates allegedly planned on selling his portion of their band’s venture without permission.
In a countersuit, Oates claimed he was trying to improve their partnership and was hurt by Hall’s “inflammatory, outlandish and inaccurate statements.”
“Over the years, Daryl has consistently and publicly been adamant about being perceived as an individual rather than as part of a duo or group. Thus, he has insisted on our being known as ‘Daryl Hall and John Oates,’ rather than the more commonly known ‘Hall & Oates,’” Oates stated in his filing. “On this point I agree. I now must act with truthfulness and make decisions that are right for myself, my family, and my artistic future.”
The lawsuit was ultimately dismissed, but Hall has shut down any hopes of a reunion with Oates.
“That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,” the Pennsylvania native told The Times in February. “I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I’m kind of used to it.”
