The Purple One would’ve been so proud! Jennifer Hudson took to Instagram on Monday, June 27, where she opened up about her show-stopping Prince tribute the evening before at the 2016 BET Awards.
“Back in my sweats and by the pool! I hope yal felt my heart tonight in my tribute to Prince!” the American Idol alum, 34, wrote alongside a selfie.
“One of the things Prince told me that I will never forget he said ‘take it to church Jennifer,’” she continued, recalling a personal moment with the late superstar. “I can only hope he's pleased!”
Inside Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, Hudson graced the BET stage on Sunday night, June 26, to perform the late pop legend’s 1984 classic “Purple Rain.” Clad in a white hooded mini — reminiscent of the outfit Prince wore to the 2005 People’s Choice Awards — the Oscar-winning singer-actress nailed every note of the iconic track.
Prior to J. Hud’s powerful performance, Stevie Wonder, Tori Kelly, Bilal, Erykah Badu and The Roots all paid their respects to Prince with their own stellar numbers.
As previously reported, the “Kiss” crooner died on April 21 at age 57 after an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota. Hours after his tragic death, Hudson sang “Purple Rain” with the cast of The Color Purple on Broadway.
Celebrities who were tuning into the BET Awards took to social media to share their excitement over the Dreamgirls star’s vocal slayage.
“Jennifer Hudson tearing the ROOF OFF,” Mia Farrow enthused, while Charlamagne Tha God wrote, “Jennifer Hudson be singing like the fate of the free world depends on her nailing it Everytime.”
