Surprise! Lance Bass' plan on how he would come out as gay to his 'N Sync band members didn't exactly go according to plan. The 34-year-old singer, who came out around age 21, ended up revealing his secret to Joey Fatone first . . . by accident.

"Joey walked in on me with the guy I was dating just kind of sitting on my lap. Straight guys don't do that," Lance joked on Access Hollywood Wednesday, March 5.

Fortunately, Bass had nothing to worry about. "He was like, 'Dude, I don't care.' I'm like, 'Surprise!'" Bass recalled. "Joey was just like, 'Dude, I don't care. I have so many gay friends — I don't care.'"

Telling the rest of his band members — Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, and Chris Kirkpatrick — went just as well.

"It was a few months after that before I told the [rest of] the guys," Bass, explained. "I don't think anyone was surprised."

The "Girlfriend" singer is now engaged to boyfriend Michael Turchin. Bass proposed to the aspiring actor in New Orleans in late August 2013.

At the Farmed and Dangerous premiere in West Hollywood on Feb. 11, Bass shared an update with Us Weekly on his wedding plans. "They're coming slowly, but we figure it's going to be at the end of the year, or maybe early next year," he explained. "We might push it a couple more months. Again. It's been a busy year, so we haven't been able to plan a thing yet. It's looking like it's a couple months delayed."
