The heart wants what it wants. In his new November 2015 Men’s Fitness cover story, a slightly older and wiser Liam Hemsworth reflects back on his high-profile engagement to Miley Cyrus — and their subsequent split.
“You fall in love with who you fall in love with,” Hemsworth, 25 told the mag. “You can never choose. I guess some people just come with a little more baggage.”
The Hunger Games hunk fell in love with Cyrus, 22, while filming opposite her in Nicholas Sparks’ The Last Song in 2010. Two years later, Hemsworth proposed to the former Hannah Montana actress with a giant 3.5-carat Neil Lane engagement ring.
They split in September 2013, right around the time Cyrus’ image shifted from wholesome Disney star to wild pop star. Following the breakup, Hemsworth immediately (and very publicly) rebounded with Mexican model Eiza Gonzalez, whom he was snapped smooching one day after calling off his engagement.
Hemsworth, however, acknowledged that Cyrus was anything but a fleeting romance. “I mean, look — we were together five years,” he said. “So I don’t think those feelings will ever change. And that’s good because that proves to me that it was real. It wasn’t just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be.”
While Hemsworth is currently single, Cyrus has moved on — most famously with Patrick Schwarzenegger, whom she broke up with after he was photographed getting handsy with a fellow USC student on spring break. As exclusively reported by Us Weekly this past summer, the “Wrecking Ball” singer subsequently started “hanging out” with Hemsworth.
“She’s a free spirit,” the Paranoia actor concluded to Men’s Fitness. “I think she’ll always surprise people with what she does, but she’s not a malicious person in any way. She’s a young girl who wants to do what she wants to do.”
When it comes to his own love life, relationships are off the table, for now. “Dating’s really difficult,” he dished. “I’m constantly traveling, and I don’t go out to clubs or anything like that. I have a great small group of friends in my life, but I barely ever meet anyone new. It’s tough to have a relationship in this industry, though not to the point where it makes me depressed. I’m constantly working, and I love working. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything at this point — I feel like I’m focusing on the right things and prioritizing things in the right way, and I’m a healthy, happy person.”
