She notes there are no hard-and-fast rules for getting started, since the whole point is to build a space that couldn’t be replicated by anyone else.

“Don’t underestimate the power of bold artwork. An oversized canvas, an unexpected print, or even a gallery wall that reflects a specific obsession or era tells a story no mass-produced decor ever could. It’s one of the most personal moves you can make in a space,” French says.
Beyond artwork, Millar suggests a few other moves for anyone easing into the look.

- Display things you actually love, from coffee-table books and travel finds to framed photos, records, ceramics and collected objects that keep a room from feeling like a showroom.
