"I never thought I would have babies with someone and then get divorced. Like, 'Oh, great job. Repeat your past,'" the cover star, 46, said of her split from Cannon, with whom she shares 5-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe. "But life happens. And it was supposed to happen. It’s fine. For them, I wish it hadn’t happened that way. For me, it was. … [singing Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams’ 'Too Much, Too Little, Too Late'] Guess it’s over. Call it a day."
Cannon, 35, filed for divorce from Carey in December 2014. They first wed back in 2008. (Carey was previously married to music producer Tommy Mottola from 1993 to 1998.)
Despite the split, the pair have remained amicable, often sharing photos of their family outings on social media. Carey has also found love again. Us Weekly confirmed in January that she's engaged to Packer.
The billionaire businessman, 48, isn't in show business, but he is a fan of Carey's music. She told Complex that her song "Hero" is his current favorite and that his interest in her career has never been a turnoff.
"I don’t expect him to be at every little thing that I do, and vice versa. He’s got a lot of stuff on his plate and so do I," she explained. "Actually, I think if he didn’t like my music, then how would I be able to handle him being around when all I’m doing is creating new stuff, doing whatever? It’s cool."
As Us Weekly exclusively revealed, the couple's upcoming nuptials will be featured on Carey's new E! reality series, Mariah's World. "Her team wants it on the show," a source told Us in April.
"It’s nuts. Mariah is very funny on camera," a second added. "[James] does what Mariah wants."
