Martine Singer is speaking out for the first time nine months after her sister and brother-in-law, Michele and Rob Reiner, were killed.
“Our lives are changed forever,” Singer told Extra in a Monday, September 28, interview. “I suppose you heal from a wound, but the scar is there. It’s a really hard thing to describe because it doesn’t — it never goes away.”
Singer reflected that Michele and Rob were “absolutely incredible together” during their 36-year marriage adding, “They met and didn’t take long before they were, kind of, together forever.”
“Everybody in the family is healing in his or her own way. I’ll never be my sister,” Singer said. “I can never be what it is that’s missing in their lives, but I consider them my kids. There’s no daylight between us.”
Michele and Rob were found dead in their home in December 2025 at ages 70 and 78, respectively. The couple’s son Nick Reiner, who has struggled with mental health and addiction issues, has since been arrested and charged with their murders. (Michele and Rob were also parents to Jake, 35, and Romy, 28. Rob was also a father to Tracy, whom he adopted while married to Penny Marshall.)
In February, Nick pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder. News broke earlier this month that prosecutors do not plan to seek the death penalty against Nick.
“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman told NBC News and reporters before a pretrial hearing. “That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.”
“We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings, and they made their views very clear,” Hochman, 62, continued, referring to Jake and Romy. “We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty.”
In the months since Rob and Michele’s deaths, Jake and Romy have tried to honor their parents’ legacy.
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time,” Jake wrote in an April essay shared to his Substack. “It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare. I can’t even begin to put myself in my parents’ shoes, but one thing I keep coming back to is how frightened they must have been.”
He continued, “They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them. They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”
