"I've been married for a while. A couple months. I had to keep it a secret from y’all," the 22-time Olympic gold medalist, 31, said. "I had to keep it hush-hush from you guys."
One day earlier, TMZ reported that Phelps and Johnson had quietly tied the knot ahead of the Rio Games. They got their marriage license on June 9 and filed their record of marriage on June 15.
Phelps confirmed the news during a golfing trip with a couple of buddies. When asked by a fan in the comments section why the couple kept their nuptials private, he replied: "Just because."
Phelps and Johnson didn't let on at all that they were already hitched when they were interviewed during the Olympics. In fact, Johnson, 31, told Access Hollywood that they had set a date for the wedding. At the time, she had already been a Mrs. for two months.
"It’ll be small and intimate for the wedding, and then we’re throwing a massive bash for everyone in the states," she said in August. "We’re kind of getting things rolling. I’ve been planning as we’ve been leading up to this. I think I have the wedding in order. Now it’s onto the party for the fun!"
The now married couple dated on and off for eight years before they got engaged in February 2015 and welcomed son Boomer, 5 months, in May.
"Baby number two may be coming soon," Phelps teased on Thursday. "Who knows, though?"
