Taking the crown! Spain’s Mireia Lalaguna Royo was named Miss World 2015 on Saturday, December 19, in the southern Chinese island resort of Sanya.
The 23-year-old model from Barcelona holds a degree in pharmacology and plans to pursue a master’s degree in nutrition.
Russia’s Sofia Nikitchuk finished in the runner-up spot, while Indonesia’s Maria Harfanti came in third place.
Royo’s win marked the first time that a contestant from Spain finished at the top. According to USA Today, the beauty earned high marks from the judges for her excellent public speaking throughout the competition.
Noticeably absent from the competition was Chinese-born Anastasia Lin — Miss Canada — who was barred from entering Sanya after China refused her a visa. Lin has previously spoken out against China’s religious policy.
China has hosted the popular pageant competition seven times since 2003. The first Miss World competition was held in Britain 64 years ago.
