Surprise! Neil Patrick Harris and his partner David Burtka shocked fans this weekend when they got married in a romantic Italian ceremony.
“Guess what?” the How I Met Your Mother alum, 41, tweeted with a photo of the tux-clad couple during the service. “@DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the ’n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband’.”
Harris publicly came out as gay in 2006 and got engaged to actor and chef Burtka, 39, in September 2007. The couple has been dating since 2004. They are dads to twins Gideon and Harper, who were born via a surrogate mother in 2010.
Their engagement became official in June 2011 after the Marriage Equality Act was passed in New York, making it legal for same sex couples to marry. After joking on Twitter about the “new” engagement, Harris clarified, “David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We’ve been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date.”
In June 2014, Harris took home the Tony Award for the lead role in the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In his speech, he once again thanked his longtime partner for his love and support.
“To my family, David, I love you so much and I am so happy that we’ve gotten to do this, thank you for your sacrifices and thank you for putting up with me in all of this,” he said.
