This Means War, indeed! On the heels of her Apr. 19 arrest in Atlanta, Reese Witherspoon canceled her Apr. 22 press appearances for Mud (including an interview on Good Morning America). The 37-year-old actress was scheduled to tape an episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Apr. 23, but Witherspoon has been removed from the lineup.
Fellow guest Eli Manning will fulfill his obligation, however. Witherspoon has since been replaced by Nurse Jackie star Adam Ferrara. The Oscar winner — who was arrested for disorderly conduct just after her husband Jim Toth was arrested on suspicion of DUI — has now become the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons.
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at Witherspoon's arrest on his eponymous late-night show Monday, Apr. 22. "The police report says she asked the cop 'Do you know my name? You're about to find out who I am.' Does that ever work? 'Do you know who I am?' is second only to 'Do you know who my father is?'" the 45-year-old quipped on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "It's a bad question because the answer is either 'no' — which is embarrassing — or 'yes, and you're going to jail.'" (Ironically, Witherspoon joked about being a heavy drinker during a January appearance on Kimmel's show.)
Witherspoon issued a public apology via her rep on Sunday, Apr. 21, saying she was "deeply embarrassed." She also acknowledged that she "had a few drinks too many" at the time of her arrest.
"The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am," the Legally Blonde star added. "I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."
Before Witherspoon went on a media blackout, however, she joined costar Matthew McConaughey at the Cinema Society screening of Mud in New York City Apr. 21. After posing for a few pictures and declining interviews, she and Toth, 42, met up with pals Chelsea Handler, Cameron Diaz, Michael Keaton, Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann at the Greenwich Hotel.
