Tale as old as time. Rihanna revealed in a new promotional interview for her upcoming movie Home that she relates her own dating life to a fairy tale romance in one surprising way.
Speaking to Time magazine with her cartoon costars Steve Martin and Jim Parsons, Rih touched on her romantic history and a famed Disney classic. Asked about her favorite animated film from when she was growing up, the singer referenced 1991's Beauty and the Beast.
"I fell in love with the Beast," she spilled with a laugh. "Pretty much my dating record so far."
While she chose not to name said Beast, Rihanna, 27, finds her most famous ex-boyfriend in the infamous Chris Brown. The two performers had a volatile on-again, off-again relationship for five years.
Lending her voice to DreamWorks' animated Home, the "Diamonds" singer started dating Brown, now 25, in early 2008 after the release of their hit single "Umbrella." The two split after the brutal pre-Grammys domestic violence incident of 2009, only to get back together a few years later.
"I decided it was more important for me to be happy," Rihanna told Rolling Stone in January 2013 of disregarding opinions on her boyfriend as the couple gave it another go. "I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that. Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."
"When you add up the pieces from the outside, it's not the cutest puzzle in the world," she added of her relationship with Brown. "You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it's different now. We don't have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about shit. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don't want to lose that."
The twosome split again, this time seemingly for good, in May 2013. Brown went on to rekindle his previous relationship with model Karrueche Tran for a short time, while Rihanna has found new excitement in a fling with Leonardo DiCaprio. Watch Rih discuss her Beast in the video above!
