Order’s up! Hundreds of people from around the country showed up at Sad Grandpa’s cookout on Saturday, March 26, to eat a burger with the man himself, Kenneth “Papaw” Harmon.
Harmon, 66, gained Internet fame earlier this month when his granddaughter Kelsey, 19, tweeted a heartbreaking photo of him eating a hamburger alone, with the caption, “Dinner with papaw tonight … he made 12 burgers for all 6 grandkids and I’m the only one who showed.”
The viral photo — which now has more than 181,000 retweets and nearly 300,000 likes on Twitter — led to Harmon’s grandson Brock’s announcement that Papaw wanted “everyone” to come to his cookout in Oklahoma.
“Papaw would like me to formally announce he’s having a cookout!!!” Brock, 20, wrote. “Next Saturday on March 26th from 11-4 Papaw will be cooking burgers!! Burgers will be $2 a burger. We will also be selling t-shirts with a picture of papaw on them and the saying ‘I had a burger with Papaw.’”
Before the cookout even began on Saturday, eager fans started to line up to catch a glimpse of the viral star.
“There are already nearly 100 people here, family and also friends, and it officially started just 16 minutes ago,” BuzzFeed reporter Tamerra Griffin tweeted.
Local resident Victoria Bumgarner added, “The line for #papawcookout is insane! So much love for Papaw! #Oklahoma.”
Oklahoma News 9 reporter Grant Hermes also attended the event, and even posed for a selfie with Harmon himself! “The man, the meme, the legend folks!” Hermes tweeted.
Some fans even drove thousands of miles to see Papaw. Justin Smith posted a photo of himself with the Twitter celeb, writing, “Here in Purcell Oklahoma with PaPaw #1400miles #papawburgers.”
Of course, Harmon’s grandkids finally made an appearance as well.
