Sam Smith Shares Hateful Instagram User: “Homophobia Is Still So Present”

Sam Smith fought back against an Instagram user that was personally attacking him and his sexuality.

Highlighting the problem. Sam Smith took to Instagram on Tuesday, Aug. 11, to call out a hateful account that was personally attacking him and his sexuality

The handle “@gaysamsmith” had the description “WE HATE F——- SMITH,” and went on to say, “There is a f—, his name is sam. when he’s on, I like to cry. he is gay but that’s okay, we can all make fun of him.” 

The British Grammy winner, 23, posted a screenshot of the profile, which had five followers and zero posts, for a specific reason.

“This genuinely doesn't offend me, coz I'm way too [thick] skinned when it comes to this kind of s—t,” Smith wrote. “BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!”

The “Stay With Me” singer came out as gay in the summer of 2014 during an interview with The FADER

"I’ve never been in a relationship before,” he said at the time. “I’ve only been in unrequited relationships where people haven’t loved me back. [New album] In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back.”
