Scarlett Johansson Suggests Ryan Reynolds Marriage Was ‘Competitive’

Self-reflection and success! In her loaded May 2016 Cosmopolitan cover story, actress Scarlett Johansson hinted that her marriage to ex-husband Ryan Reynolds may have been competitive.

“The logistics of being with another actor are challenging,” the Jungle Book actress, 31, noted. “There has to be a real understanding of how you share your time, especially when two people’s careers are going at the same rate. Or even if one person is more successful than the other, that also proves challenging. There may be a competitive thing.”

This isn’t the first time Johansson has alluded to the demise of her three-year marriage to Reynolds, which ended in 2011. Last April, in an interview with Parade, she reflected: “Acting is a very strange world to be co-existing in. It’s very volatile. There’s always going to be the more successful person. It’s related to rejection. Because actors, if they’re not having success, connect it directly to unpopularity — to the fact that nobody wants them.”

Neither Johansson nor Reynolds have to worry about their popularity. Both have starred in multiple high-profile movies in the last decade, including 2009’s He’s Just Not That Into You and 2012’s The Avengers for Johansson, and 2009’s The Proposal and 2016’s Deadpool for Reynolds. Both also found love again: Reynolds is now married to Blake Lively, who he wed in 2012, while Johansson tied the knot with French journalist Romain Dauriac in 2014.

“Strangely, I don’t think he’d seen a lot of my work,” Johansson told Cosmo of her current husband in her latest cover story. “He knew who I was, but I wasn’t, like, his celebrity crush.” Though Dauriac isn’t part of the movie industry — and Johansson prefers it that way — she expounded on some of the similarities and interests they share at home in NYC.

“We’re both street rats,” the Captain America: Civil War star told Cosmo. “It seems wonderful to be raised in a natural setting, but I wouldn’t know how to do it. A big city would always draw me back.”

They’re also big fans of ABC’s Shark Tank. “My husband had this idea for an app and was like, ‘We should pitch this to Shark Tank!'” she revealed, adding that she disagreed with his proposal. “He was like, ‘What? You mean it wouldn’t pass the Sharks?’ I was like, ‘We’re not gonna get into a fight over this!'”

Johansson also revealed that one of the worst moments in her life took place while she was dating another fellow celebrity. “Long, long ago, I had someone in my life who was forever unavailable … but, like, so attractively unavailable,” she disclosed. “Rock bottom is the moment when you’re like, ‘I’ve lost myself. Why am I standing outside this bar at 1:30 in the morning texting while my friends are inside? Or taking a taxi to see him at some ungodly hour? This isn’t me.’ That is the moment you’ve gotta cut it off. Otherwise, it will keep coming back, suck your blood. You keep making the same mistakes until you don’t make them, you know?”

She and Dauriac happily share a 19-month-old baby girl, Rose Dorothy. Like most moms, Johansson has her own routine. “I get up, pour the ol’ bowl of Cheerios, take care of le bebe, make sure she’s all set, then I go fight, kick box, do Filipino stick fighting and tactical weapons training,” she joked of her action hero roles. “And then it’s nighttime, and I go home, make dinner, wash le bebe, pop her in her little bedtime place, and hit the hay.”

The May 2016 issue of Cosmo is on stands now.
