Suri Cruise has come a long way from $600 Jimmy Choo heels and an $850 Ferragamo purse.
On Tuesday, with mom Katie Holmes at her side, the famous six-year-old returned home from school in Manhattan clad in not-so-haute couture: Her Lands' End school uniform of white polo shirt, black skirt, knee-high socks and Mary Janes, plus a pink raincoat and headband.
Following Holmes' lightning-fast divorce from Tom Cruise, the fashion designer and actress (returning to Broadway next month in Dead Accounts) snapped up a new apartment in NYC's Chelsea neighborhood and enrolled her little girl in the elite Avenues school, which mandates uniforms and bans the kind of high-end kiddie fashion to which Suri had become accustomed.
Holmes chose Avenues "because it could keep up with a gifted child like Suri," a pal explained to Us Weekly. Those uniforms are no problem for the Holmes and Yang designer, 33. "She wants Suri to fit in and be more of a normal kid," the source says.
Within reason, however. Holmes recently told friends "the divorce has been hard on Suri, and she's acting out . . .Katie says no to some things, but gives a little leeway. She knows Tom is going to spoil her."
