Shania Twain got candid about struggling with her body confidence.

Twain, 60, opened up to London’s The Times about her “unhealthy” relationship with her body during her 2019 Las Vegas residency on Sunday, June 14. “I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body,” she shared. “I’m like, ‘Oh, I cannot stand this changing body.’ But that was so unhealthy. Who cannot look at themselves in the mirror?”

The singer continued, “So, all of a sudden, I’m bloating and I’m definitely not in control. I can’t just lose five pounds.” In order to lose weight, Twain said she turned to “very unhealthy things.”

“I was working my body more than I was feeding it to keep up with the strain,” she admitted, noting that it left her “malnourished” and resulted in an onstage injury.

Now, Twain has a much healthier mindset, which she credited to “menopause” and learning that “some things you cannot control.”

“I’m like, ‘Bring on the mirrors. I’m going to look at myself all day long!’” she said.

This isn’t the first time Twain has been open about her confidence. In March 2025, she exclusively told Us Weekly that she “always” felt “insecure” about her body.

“As a female, throughout my youth [I was] touched inappropriately so many times [and] I was in abusive situations where you hate being a woman,” she said. “I hated being a girl. My mother goes, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ and I said, ‘A bodybuilder.’ I wanted to be a big, strong man that nobody was going to f*** around with. No one was going to touch my arm or my ass or anything unless I was OK with it.”

She continued, “I was hiding all through my teens. I hated having boobs, I hated having hips. I think a lot of that was also because a lot of the models when I was a kid were very, very thin. That was a sign of elegance and feminine beauty to me.”

Twain also shared her advice for people who are struggling with body confidence, telling Us not to compare yourself to others.

“You can wish a lot of time away, ignoring what you actually look like. Just get real with yourself,” she explained. “I wish I’d come to this so much earlier, but I think referencing yourself to others is dangerous.”
