Sophia Bush: People Said, ‘You’re Not Allowed to Be Political’ Because I’m an Actress!

Raise your voice! Actress Sophia Bush visited HuffPost Live on Tuesday, March 8, and proved again that she’s more than just a pretty face.

The California native, who has more than 1 million followers on Twitter and over 2 million on Instagram, has never been afraid to voice her political opinion. However, not everyone is receptive to hearing it. “When I speak up about issues, sometimes that really motivates people … people would know that I’m very outspoken,” Bush said. “And I still have people saying, ‘You know, you’re an actress, stay in your lane. You’re not allowed to be political.’”

That only motivates the Chicago P.D. star, 33, to take an even stronger stand. “Excuse me? I travel all around the world and see the effects of education access, environmental crisis, what’s happening in our political sphere and how it affects the developing world,” the One Tree Hill star exclaimed. “I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to voice my opinions about that but thanks!”

Though Bush did not want to disclose which candidate she favors for president of the United States, she did have much to say about Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton potentially being the first female president. “What frustrates me though is that [discussing Clinton being the possible first female president] is putting her in a box,” the actress explained. “[Voters] are looking at effectiveness and again they want to marginalize her into being the ‘female candidate.’”
