President Donald Trump paid tribute to Dolly Parton shortly after she died at the age of 80, revealing that the United States flags will be lowered to half-staff for one week in her honor.
“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people,” Trump, 80, wrote in a Truth Social post on Tuesday, August 25. “There has never been anyone like her, and never will.”
Trump then shared that he intended to honor the late “Jolene” singer across the country.
“In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM,” he wrote. “Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
Trump reacted to the news shortly after a rep for Parton revealed that she died earlier on Tuesday following months of undisclosed health issues.
“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth and kindness that made us all feel like family,” her rep said in a statement. “Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.”
The rep went on to add that Parton’s “songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.”
Parton’s nephew Bryan Seaver also paid tribute to her in an emotional video shared on her Instagram profile.
“My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you,” he said. “She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family, whether you liked it or not.”
Seaver then said that Parton was “a farmer, just like her daddy.”
“He farmed the soil; she farmed songs and happiness,” he said. “Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”
Paton’s cause of death has not yet been revealed, though she had been open about her health issues in the months leading up to her death. On Friday, August 21, Parton told fans she had to skip the opening of a new ride at Dollywood because her doctor had advised her not to travel.
“I’ve told you before, all my fans, that I’ve had a few little health issues, and sometimes I get a little dizzy and I get dehydrated,” she said at the time.
