PDRN skincare, the salmon-derived K-beauty treatment promising glass skin, has seen a 1,566 percent surge in search interest, according to a Two Face Aesthetics report citing Google Trends data. Here’s what dermatologists want you to know before trying it.
What Is PDRN Skincare and Where Does It Come From?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, and it’s made from purified DNA fragments extracted from salmon sperm. The compound is biocompatible with human DNA, meaning skin cells respond to it as if it were their own repair signal.

The extracted sperm is filtered to remove impurities and sterilized before use. PDRN can also be derived from certain trout, but salmon remains the most common source in skincare.
How Does PDRN Skincare Work on the Skin?
Once applied, PDRN activates adenosine A2A receptors in the skin, setting off a cascade of regenerative processes tied to collagen production, hydration and repair. The compound first gained traction in South Korea, where it was praised for both medical and cosmetic healing properties.
“It stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin, improves microcirculation to deliver nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, accelerates tissue repair and wound healing (making it ideal post-laser or post-procedure), reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, and enhances the skin’s moisture retention by strengthening the barrier,” Del Campo told Byrdie. PDRN has been studied since the 1990s, primarily for wound healing and tissue repair.

PDRN has decades of peer-reviewed medical research behind it, which sets it apart from many viral skincare trends. Dermatologists point to its established use in wound care and tissue regeneration as the foundation for its cosmetic applications.
“PDRN has real staying power because there are decades of science-based research that is supported by medical use, which gives it credibility,” Melda Isaac, MD, told Cosmopolitan. Salmon is favored as a source because of its purity profile. “Studies indicate that salmon sperm are the most suitable source for the extraction of highly purified DNA without the risk of impurities due to their low levels of proteins, peptides, and other contaminants compared to other DNA sources,” Isaac added.
What Are the Skin Benefits of PDRN Over Time?
Regular use of PDRN, particularly through injection, is associated with improved firmness, tone and elasticity by stimulating fibroblasts and boosting collagen. Building collagen is central to maintaining a youthful complexion because it provides structural integrity and skin resilience.
“Its regenerative properties support cellular renewal and stimulate fibroblasts to increase collagen production, helping skin recover more efficiently after stress or injury,” Anetta Reszko, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, told Women’s Health. Over time, Reszko said, PDRN can “improve tone, firmness, and overall skin quality, particularly in skin that appears depleted or slow to repair.”
Who Should Avoid PDRN Skincare Products?
Anyone with a fish or seafood allergy should either patch test carefully or skip PDRN products altogether. For everyone else, the ingredient is generally well tolerated across skin types, according to Del Campo.
“[Those with] fish allergies. People with seafood sensitivities should patch test or avoid,” Marnie Nussbaum, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Marnie Nussbaum Dermatology and Aesthetics in New York City, told Byrdie.
How Do You Use PDRN Skincare at Home?
PDRN works best in leave-on formulas like serums and creams, where the ingredient has time to penetrate and act on the skin. Serums are the top pick because their smaller molecule sizes allow for deeper absorption.
