Eight adults in Kentucky have been arrested after police claimed that they abused seven children in a “filthy and deplorable” home.
The Richmond Police Department announced in a press release that Christine Carter, Johnna Carter, Richard Carter, Sarah Carter, Ishmeal Thornsberry, Green Schindler, Mark Brumbaugh and Matthew Brumbaugh were arrested on Friday, October 9, following an investigation regarding the alleged abuse.
The seven children – ranging from ages 1 to 17 – were removed from a home in Richmond, Kentucky, according to court documents obtained by WDKY.
The home reportedly had feces and urine smeared on the floor, stairs and other surfaces. Authorities added that 10 dogs and one cat also lived inside the house with the 15 people.
It’s not currently known how all of the adult suspects are related to the children or each other.
All eight suspects are currently in custody at the Madison County Detention Center, and their arraignment hearing was held on Monday, October 12.
The Richmond Police Department said that all seven of the children were taken from the home and placed with Social Services, and Child Protective Services and the Department for Community Based Services were involved in the investigation.
Christine, 41, has been charged with first-degree criminal abuse or neglect of a child under 13 and first-degree criminal abuse, while Johnna, 21, was charged with first-degree criminal abuse or neglect of a child under 13 and first-degree criminal abuse.
Richard, 45, was charged with first-degree criminal abuse or neglect of a child under 13, first-degree criminal abuse, first-degree rape and human trafficking, and Sarah, 28, was charged with first-degree criminal abuse or neglect of a child under 13, first-degree criminal abuse, distribution of obscene matter and incest. Matthew, 30, was charged with incest.
Mark, 30, was charged with incest, first-degree criminal abuse or neglect of a child under 13, first-degree criminal abuse and third-degree sexual abuse, and Schindler, 63, was charged with first-degree criminal abuse or neglect of a child under 13, first-degree criminal abuse, incest, human trafficking, first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy. Thornsberry, 21, was charged with first-degree criminal abuse.
It’s not currently clear if any of the defendants have entered pleas or retained legal counsel following their arrests. The Richmond Police Department had no additional updates to share when contacted by Us about the case.
