A lawyer representing Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is offering a candid update on his client’s condition after she survived two failed executions.

“It remains the same, she’s still in the hospital on a ventilator, critically ill,” Pike’s attorney, Stephen Ferrell, told Jake Tapper while appearing on CNN on Sunday, October 4. “We don’t really know the prognosis yet and may not know for several days.”

According to Ferrell, he doesn’t believe that Pike, 50, has regained her ability to speak and “may not fully recover” from the injuries he claims she sustained after two botched lethal injection attempts.

“I think one of the main things that will leave this up in the air for a while is the fact that we don’t know what the prognosis is,” he added.

Ferrell also claimed that he hasn’t been allowed to visit his client in the hospital.

“She is guarded. I’m not sure who may have seen her. I know I have not seen her,” he alleged. “The state of Tennessee has not yet said whether it will ultimately try to execute her again.”

Pike had been scheduled to be executed in Tennessee on Wednesday, September 30, and was administered two lethal injections that ultimately failed to kill her. (Pike was convicted in 1996 of murdering her classmate Colleen Slemmer and sentenced to death.)

Shortly after receiving the injections, reporters in the viewing gallery said they heard Pike snoring and, at one point, complaining of pain. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital.

“As of last night, October 1, 2026, Ms. Pike remains critically ill and is being treated at a Nashville-area hospital,” her attorneys wrote in an emergency court motion obtained by Us, attempting to halt another execution attempt. “She is intubated, on a ventilator and remains unconscious.”

Governor Bill Lee has since opened an investigation into the failed executions, while police commissioner Frank Strada resigned from his post on Saturday, October 3. (Strada and the Tennessee Department of Corrections have maintained that the scheduled execution followed protocols.)

“I believe] the department carried out its responsibilities in accordance with the established protocol,” Strada told The New York Times in a statement, noting that “stepping aside is in the best interest” of the state’s external investigation. “I believe this review is entirely appropriate and necessary, and I look forward to doing everything I can to help determine exactly what occurred.”

Lee, 66, also issued a statement after Strada’s resignation, which will go into effect later this month.

“I appreciate his willingness to put the interests of Tennesseans first during this difficult moment,” he told the outlet on Saturday. “I have accepted his decision to step down and am grateful for his commitment to ensuring a smooth leadership transition.”
