Authorities believe a Pennsylvania father threw his two children off a parking garage before jumping to his own death in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police in Mt. Lebanon responded to reports of three bodies that were found in the street near the garage around 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.

Authorities initially said the deaths weren’t accidental, and the Mt. Lebanon and Allegheny County police departments eventually confirmed that the victims were two children and their father. The father has been identified as Patrick Lynch and his children as James and Caroline, according to WTAE-TV.

First responders performed life-saving measures on James, 8, Caroline, 6, and Lynch, 42, after they were found in the road near the parking garage. Despite their efforts, all three victims were declared dead at the scene.

Following the incident, Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman said the tragedy would cause “a significant amount of trauma for the community.”

“Everyone in the Mt. Lebanon community will know someone involved in this incident,” he said.

The Mt. Lebanon School District’s Markham and Washington Elementary Schools announced they would be closed on Wednesday, November 4, following the murder-suicide.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news involving members of our Mt. Lebanon school community. Our hearts are with all those affected, and we are keeping them and their loved ones in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” the district said in a statement, per the outlet.

While the other schools in the district remained open, the statement added that students could have an excused absence if they were impacted by the tragedy.

“During difficult times, it is important to remember that no one has to navigate challenging moments alone. A tragedy can affect each of us differently, and it is normal to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, grief, anxiety, or uncertainty. Whether you are struggling with the impact of recent events, feeling overwhelmed, or simply need someone to talk to, support is available. Please do not hesitate to reach out for help,” the district said.
