Netflix’s Death of a Pastor’s Wife took a deep dive into Mica Miller’s stalking case after she died in April 2024.
While her death was initially ruled a suicide, authorities took a closer look into the case when it was revealed that Miller claimed she was being actively followed, tracked and harassed in the months leading up to her death.
Less than two years after her death, her estranged husband, John-Paul Miller, was arrested in connection to the stalking claims, and the case remains ongoing.

Why Was Mica Miller’s Husband John-Paul Miller Arrested?
Mica was 30 years old when she was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024. Medical examiners officially ruled her death as suicide, but speculation regarding her cause of death began to swirl when her tumultuous separation from pastor husband John-Paul became known.
Police said that Mica claimed she was a victim in a stalking plot before she died, and she even told authorities that she was “afraid for her life” one month before her death.
An investigation into Mica’s death eventually revealed that John-Paul was behind her stalking.
More than one year after her death, the United State’s Attorney’s Office District of South Carolina confirmed that John-Paul was indicted of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators by a grand jury in December 2025.
John-Paul was accused of sending unwanted and aggressive communications to Mica, which began in November 2022 and continued until her death. He allegedly went as far as to post a nude photo of Mica online without her consent, while he also allegedly surveilled her vehicles with tracking devices. (John-Paul claimed that he monitored her whereabouts to “protect Mica from purchasing firearms” due to concerns about her mental health.)
Authorities accused John-Paul of contacting Mica over 50 times in one day, and he also allegedly interfered with her finances and her daily activities.
Additionally, John-Paul was accused of lying to authorities while he was being interviewed about the case by federal investigators.
Following his arrest, John-Paul pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Where Does Mica Miller’s Stalking Case Stand Today?
John-Paul’s trial has moved at a slow pace after it experienced a handful of delays.
A court-ordered continuance was filed in mid-August 2026, and his trial was pushed back to begin in October 2026, according to Netflix’s Tudum.
“It was supposed to happen back in the spring. It got pushed in June, to August, and now it’s October,” Death of a Pastor’s Wife codirector Michael Gasparro told the outlet.
John-Paul has remained out of jail after he posted a $100,000 bond, according to WPDE.
What Is John-Paul Miller’s Potential Sentence If He Is Found Guilty?
If John-Paul is found guilty of the charges, he could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison for cyberstalking and two years in prison for his false statements. John-Paul could also be ordered to pay a fine of up to $250,000 if he is convicted.
While John-Paul is still waiting to learn his fate, Mica’s brother, Nate Francis, told Netflix’s Tudum that he doesn’t believe the pastor’s charges are serious enough.
“These charges only reflect a fraction of what he did to her,” he argued.
