A whole new. . . movie! Disney is gearing up for an Aladdin live-action prequel, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Wednesday, July 15.
The new comedy adventure, called Genies, will finally reveal how Genie ended up in the mysterious lamp.
The late Robin Williams voiced Genie in Disney’s 1992 original classic. The heartwarming tale about a boy pretending to be a prince also featured the voices of Full House alum Scott Weinger (Aladdin), Linda Larkin (Jasmine), Jonathan Freeman (Jafar), Frank Welker (Abu), and Gilbert Gottfried, who voiced the pesky parrot Iago. (In August 2014, the Broadway cast of Aladdin honored Williams by having a “Friend Like Me” sing-along with their audience.)
Genies is just the latest live-action flick to get the green light. Projects about Mulan, Prince Charming, and Tinker Bell are all in the works, too. (Reese Witherspoon will star as Peter Pan’s pixie dust-sprinkling friend.) And Emma Watson, Josh Gad, and Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens are currently filming a Beauty and the Beast live-action movie.
