It all began with a ghost in a black rubber sex suit. Ryan Murphy has teased that every season of American Horror Story is interconnected, and fans have always watched the FX series closely for clues and connections that hint at a method to its creators’ madness. On that note, enter the latest AHS season 6 trailer, which reminds us in signature creepy fashion that the Emmy-winning series may have many faces, but they’re all attached to the same monster.
The new clip, which dropped Thursday, August 18, is horror evolution in action. The latex-clad ghost from Murder House is drowning inside the weeping eye of Asylum‘s pale nun, who lives inside the mouth of Coven‘s snake, who is hiding under the voluminous skirts of the matriarchal figure from Freak Show — and they’re all inside the head of that key-crunching vixen from last year’s Hotel.
And what of season 6? Sorry, kids: The new trailer is super-straightforward about where AHS has been, but still keeping it vague about where we’re headed next.
Almost all of the enigmatic, are-they-or-aren’t-they teasers for the upcoming season get a turn at the end, from the Nosferatu-inspired shadow to a retro B-movie bombshell shrieking in a swamp.
Per the head honchos at FX, all but one of these creepy clips is a misdirect — and the true theme is a mystery that won’t be revealed until the very last minute.
If you think you’ve figured it out, you can show off your sleuthing skills in a contest to guess which promo is the real deal. Otherwise, hang tight to find out what’s in store for season 6 — and how the new installment connects to the rest of the horrors in the AHS universe — when the new season premiere drops on September 14.
Watch the terrifying video above, if you dare. American Horror Story returns to FX Wednesday, September 14, at 10 p.m. ET.
