Even the most perfect illusion has to shatter sometime, and for American Horror Story, that big break is just around the corner.
After weeks of misdirecting fans with a bevy of phony teaser trailers, the Emmy-winning FX series will make its sixth season premiere on Wednesday, September 14 — and fans will finally find out which of those creep-tastic potential themes was the real deal. But before they let the cat (or demon baby, or swamp monster) out of the bag, AHS released this final reminder of just how hard they’ve been working to keep you guessing: a supercut of every teaser, set to Lady Gaga‘s new song, “Perfect Illusion.”
The vignettes flash by in a warp-speed mélange of horror, but all your faves are here: from the macerating demon doll, to tarantula-lash lady, to the Family of the Damned out for a lovely twilight stroll. But like the song says, it was all a perfect illusion … or at least an inspired bit of marketing on the part of the network. And when it comes to the elusive season 6 theme, there’s nothing new here.
Wait: Or is there?
In the last moment of the video, an image appears that we’re pretty sure we haven’t seen before: a mirror held by an unseen person’s hands, in which a woman writhes and screams inside a whirling cloud of smoke.
On the one hand, this could always be another red herring on the part of the American Horror Story crew — or even just a clever riff on the whole “illusion” thing (smoke and mirrors, get it?). But knowing that fans are scrutinizing every frame of every promo for clues about what’s coming, could the mirror be an Easter egg? A fairy tale-inspired set piece? A haunted window into the underworld? Or Is the writhing woman caught not in a cloud of smoke, but in American Horror Story: The Mist?
Among the little we do know about the new season is that cast members will include Sarah Paulson, Matt Bomer, Cuba Gooding Jr. — and yes, Gaga herself. The plot thickens.
