These restaurantgoers came for the pancakes but stayed for the show. Dick Van Dyke surprised diners at a Denny’s location in Santa Monica, California, with an impromptu performance of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” during the breakfast rush.
The 90-year-old legendary actor broke into the hit song from his 1968 classic movie of the same name. He was joined by his fellow members of The Vantastix a capella quartet, Eric Bradley, Bryan Chadima and Mike Mendyke.
In a Facebook post, the Dick Van Dyke Show actor shared a fan’s video of the Denny’s sing-along. “Breakfast at Denny’s, with a side of grits makes me want to sing!!” Van Dyke captioned the Friday, August 12, clip.
As seen in the video, Van Dyke looks snazzy in a black blazer, complete with an American flag pin, as he smiles and laughs with the crowd. The group had the full attention of most diners, and several filmed the performance. However, some of the Denny’s workers hilariously went about their job, serving and rushing back and forth to the kitchen.
At the end, the entire restaurant gives a round of applause for the the best entertainment Denny’s has probably ever offered.
The Vantastix may have been getting some practice in for a gig later this month. They’re headlining a rare concert in Cerritos, California, on August 28.
