Get the celebratory cigars ready! Independence Day’s sequel officially has a new title. Director Roland Emmerich and members of the cast announced during a live-streamed press conference on Monday, June 22, that the film will be called Independence Day: Resurgence.
Most of the cast, including Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, took part in a Q&A panel during the exciting event. Their costars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, and Vivica A. Fox — who starred in the original 1996 adventure sci-fi — also attended.
“My character’s no longer working the pole,” Fox joked of Jasmine, her stripper character who played Will Smith’s love interest in Independence Day. “And now what’s great is 20 years later she’s moved on and is working in the hospital as a hospital administrator. She’s saving lives and raising a very responsible man (Dylan Hiller) played by Jessie Usher.” (The Little Rascals‘ Ross Bagley played Dylan in the original flick.)
Independence Day: Resurgence may not have Smith as its leading man this time, but there’s still plenty of alien butt to kick. In the action-packed movie, the U.S. uses recovered alien technology to protect the Earth, but extraterrestrial life appears to always be one step ahead of them. (It’s the end of the world — as they know it!)
