It’s official: Lady Gaga is set to star in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born. The singer confirmed the news on Twitter on Tuesday, August 16.
“I'm elated to be directed by & starring w/ Bradley in this project. He's a brilliant visionary artist. #AStarIsBorn #AStarIsBornCooperGaga,” Gaga shared with followers after news broke of the Warner Bros deal.
In a statement to The Wrap, Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros. Pictures, said: “For those of us lucky enough to watch him work as an actor and producer, it has been clear that Bradley would make this transition to director. We are honored that he is doing it, here, at his home — Warner Bros. — and with Lady Gaga as a collaborator and costar. The world is in for a treat as these great artists craft an all new vision of A Star is Born.”
According to Deadline, the film, which marks Cooper’s directorial debut, is based off the original 1937 film by the same title and 1954 remake which starred Judy Garland and James Mason. Gaga will star as “as the ingenue singer whose star rises as quickly as her troubled lover/mentor’s star is falling,” the site reports.
Production is set to begin early next year in California and the script will be written by Will Fetters, whose credits include Nicholas Sparks' The Best of Me and The Lucky One, according to Deadline.
Gaga, 30, will also write and perform music for the film, which is being produced by Bill Gerber, Jon Peters, Todd Phillips, and Basil Iwanyk, along with Cooper.
The Grammy-winning musician and Oscar-nominated actor were spotted out together in Malibu this past April, perhaps to discuss the project.
Gaga most recently starred in American Horror Story: Hotel, for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her performance as the Countess.
According to multiple reports, Beyoncé was also in talks for the role.
