Will Secret Service sing in the backseat? First lady Michelle Obama joined Snapchat on Tuesday, June 21, to make a very special announcement: She will be doing a new “Carpool Karaoke” segment with James Corden!
“Oh hey! Look who just joined @Snapchat. Add: MichelleObama,” FLOTUS, 52, captioned a selfie on Snapchat. Corden, 37, then posted a video from her account.
“Hi, I’m at the White House today,” he said. “I’m going to take a spin in a car and sing some songs with …”
The first lady chimed in: “Me!”
The Late Late Show production team visited the White House before taking it on the road. “Wait a minute… What’s @JKCorden doing on Michelle Obama’s Snapchat??” the show’s official account tweeted, sharing a Snapchat of the British comedian.
Corden’s big news comes nearly two weeks after he hosted the 70th Annual Tony Awards, which were held at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. He’s previously rocked out in the car with Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gwen Stefani (and special guests George Clooney and Julia Roberts!), Carrie Underwood, Adele, One Direction and Jennifer Lopez.
Back in March, Corden opened up about the success of “Carpool Karaoke” — and why he doesn’t want to overdo it. “Now, for us, it’s mostly about protecting it and not doing it too much,” he told Time magazine. “We could do one every week if we wanted to, but we don’t. To stagger it so it always feels fresh. The two things we think are: They have to have enough hits, and there are so many brilliant artists who I’d love to ride around in a car with, but you have to have enough hits to ride around in a car for 10 or 12 minutes. And I have to be a fan. I have to go, ‘Oh, my God.’ Because that’s part of the joyfulness of it, that this is someone I love and respect.”
