It seems that Nick Viall is destined for second place! Though the Bachelorette vet admitted he was "nervous" about proposing to Kaitlyn Bristowe in the Bachelorette finale, he still seemed pretty confident as he arrived to pop the question to his beloved.
"Being engaged and finding the love of my life has always been hugely important to me and I think the calmness that I have is the certainty that I do love Kaitlyn and the confidence that I have that she loves me," he said in a voiceover. "I'm looking forward to finding out if I'm right."
But he might not have looked forward to it as much if he had known her answer!
"I woke up today just thinking about this whole process — how we started talking and we just had no expectations and how quickly things turned into something more. Every moment that I spent with you since I've been here has been better than expected and just how crazy and in a lot of ways how the odds are stacked against us," Viall began. "The reason I showed up in the first place was that I just felt something about you and it was a feeling that I always wanted to feel about someone."
He continued, "I look at you and I think about how in love I am with you and what you mean to me. I'm not ready to let you go and I don't want to let us go because I am in love with you. I look at you and I have such confidence in you and in us and I am yours forever if you'll have me, and, umm, Kaitlyn—"
But Bristowe finally decided to make Nick stop.
"Oh my god. I'm sorry," she whispered. "I know that we talked about if I didn't feel this, that I would let you know and I don't want to take away — because I did need every single second that we've had together…. I've looked for everything and I want to find something that has gone wrong, and the only explanation that I have is that my heart is just with somebody else." In an attempt to explain why she'd let it go this far, Kaitlyn added, "I really needed all this time with you. In my head — oh god."
An obviously stunned Nick responded, "I'm not trying to be short, I just don't think there's anything you could say that would make me less confused. Listen, if you were in love with me, we'd be having a different conversation," he said as Kaitlyn tried to soften the blow by reiterating her strong feelings for him.
"I don't need to continue to hear how you love or loved me," he said. "I don't need to keep hear that because I heard it the whole time. You took things from me."
For her part, Kaitlyn argued it was real to her in the moment. "It wasn't that real," Nick snapped back. "What I felt for you was greater than a moment," he added.
Kaitlyn continued to plead her side of things with Nick, but he wasn't having it. "It's not fair to tell me that what I feel, you feel the same. Because you don't and if you did, you'd have a ring on your finger right now." The man has a point!
At that point, it was time for Viall to leave. "I hope it works out for you," Nick said. "I don't want to sit here and say things that are hurtful, but you don't want to be with me. You don't feel what I feel. You don't love me."
Later, he lamented, "Honestly, I feel a little foolish. I do feel like it was the best setup. To actually hear her tell me she loves me more than once — it is like a f—ing joke. I am the world's biggest joke."
In the aftermath, Kaitlyn said she felt "awful," but she might not feel as awful as the man who was just humiliated on national TV.
