Only Murders in the Building will be going through a big relocation change if the show returns for season 7.
After the sixth season of Only Murders in the Building premieres December 8, with Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) traveling to London to solve their newest case, the hit Hulu series will move back to New York City.
The writers’ room, however, was always based in Los Angeles — until now. Deadline confirmed on Tuesday, September 1, that the room will relocate to the East Coast for a potential seventh season. While the show hasn’t been officially renewed yet, it is reportedly expected to return amid ongoing success.
The writing team for season 7 also hasn’t been confirmed, but some writers are likely staying on. They will move to NYC for an in-person room led by showrunner John Hoffman, per Deadline.
By commissioning a writers room before the show is officially renewed, Hulu is attempting to shorten gaps between seasons. OMITB would usually finish writing a season in Los Angeles before Hoffman went to Manhattan for filming.
Deadline reported that “complex logistics” of producing season 6 in London — which wrapped in August — made it more difficult to immediately return to the writers room for a seventh season, which is expected to be set in NYC again.
The move back to the Big Apple was ultimately made to get the new season ready for 2027 (or the start of 2028), since writing and filming would have to overlap as Hoffman juggled his roles behind the scenes on the hit series.
OMITB isn’t the only show making moves.
News broke in May that Tracker is relocating to Los Angeles with the biggest California tax credit for a series to date. According to Deadline, the hit CBS series starring Justin Hartley would be moving from Vancouver, where the first three seasons were shot.
Filming for season 4 began in late June after the $48 million tax credit.
“I’m proud of what we built in Vancouver. I’m also very excited we’re bringing Tracker to L.A.,” Hartley, 49, said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to continuing to tell these stories alongside the new, fresh places we’ll be heading to next. Most importantly, I want to thank the fans for showing up for us every step of the way. We couldn’t do this without you.”
Hartley later shared more in-depth thoughts on the change.
“In terms of tone and character, I don’t think it’ll impact the show at all,” he told The Wrap in May. “Our show is a road show. Our character goes from town to town across the United States of America and meets people from all different walks of life and helps them out. These strangers become kind of his family in a way.”
The actor expressed excitement about making the move to Los Angeles.
“To be able to shoot in a different place that gives us different landscapes, we’re able to go to places — New York, D.C., the desert, Texas, the beach,” Hartley noted. “It just opens up our world in terms of landscape, which is such a big character of our show.”
