Rosewood is about to have one less secret. Before revealing on Monday, August 29, that a major character will die on Pretty Little Liars’ summer finale, show creator Marlene King told Us Weekly exclusively during a recent press event that it’s possible a lead character may be killed off.
“They all want their characters to die in the end,” King told Us of Lucy Hale (Aria), Shay Mitchell (Emily), Troian Bellisario (Spencer) and Ashley Benson (Hanna). “I’m like, ‘Why would you want that? That’s terrible!’ Anything is possible on this show.”
This isn’t the first time that King has considered killing off one of the show’s stars. “We almost had it be Alison who died in the five-years forward,” King added to Us. “At the last minute, I was like, ‘We can’t do that. It’s too devastating.’”
While King notes that Sasha Pieterse was on board with the story line, the producer adds, “I don’t think she was thrilled, but she was OK with it.”

King hasn’t yet shared who would die in the show’s Tuesday, August 30, summer finale, but she did reveal that the anticipated scene tops the list of Rosewood’s many, many deaths. “It’s the most spectacular death of any character on our show,” King said in a Facebook Live interview August 29. “It’s a thrill ride.”
Although the episode has a shocking reveal, fans will get even more answers when Pretty Little Liars returns for its final season in April 2017. “All good things must come to an end,” Hale said on Facebook Live. “Now we’ll finally answer all your questions because we have to!”
Pretty Little Liars‘ season 7 summer finale airs on Freeform Tuesday, August 30, at 8 p.m. ET.
