‘The Real Housewives of Potomac’ Season 1 Reunion Part 1 Recap: Katie Rost Calls Off Engagement, the Women Battle Over Race

If you thought the ladies of The Real Housewives of Potomac were a bit buttoned-up this season, you were in for a treat when the buttons came flying off for part 1 of the season 1 reunion special on Sunday, April 10. There was talk of engagements getting called off, divorces getting called off and shade as far as the eye could see.

Katie Rost Is No Longer Engaged to Andrew Martin

The episode started off with Andy Cohen addressing Katie Rost’s missing engagement ring. The self-proclaimed “ball and gala girl” was last seen accepting a proposal from her longtime boyfriend, Andrew Martin, in the season 1 finale. Tonight, a brave-faced Katie told Andy, “I actually returned my engagement ring yesterday … The engagement is off.”

Karen Huger immediately piped in with, “I’m not surprised.” Charrisse Jordan said, “I’m happy. She was rushing things a little too much.”

Karen Huger Might Not Actually Be the “Grand Dame of Potomac”

After admitting that her engagement was off, Katie went on the offensive. She called out Gizelle Bryant for renting her home and then switched gears over to Karen, saying, “Karen is not the grand dame of Potomac. That’s not true … There’s a delusional sense of entitlement.” Time to alert the Grand Dame Committee that there is a fraud in our midst!

Karen did admit that her less-than-flashy cocktail reception in honor of her Alzheimer’s charity was to raise money for an event that won’t happen for two more years. Robyn Dixon didn’t really see the point and said, “I don’t understand why you wasted our valuable time. You could have just made a donation to an Alzheimer’s association.”

Karen Gets Confronted About Calling Kal Blount “the Help”

Finally, it was time to revisit Charrisse’s crab boil, where Karen referred to Kal Blount, Gizelle’s hairdresser and the owner of KalixtoB Hair, as “the help.” Gizelle told Karen, “You referred to Kal as ‘the help,’ which was offensive to me.” To which the self-proclaimed etiquette expert replied, “Calling him ‘the help’ was the best thing I could do. I’m sorry — you looked like you were working that day. I meant no disrespect.”

Robyn then asked Karen, “Do you understand that calling people in service positions ‘the help’ is offensive?” Karen rambled about how she worked at Taco Bell and Burger King and refused to give the question a simple yes or no answer, which frustrated Robyn and Gizelle further.

Robyn Says There Is a Definite Chance She and Juan Dixon Will Get Married (… Again)

When Andy asked Robyn about the status of her relationship with Juan Dixon — her live-in ex-husband and the admitted “love of her life” — Robyn said, “I don’t date anyone, and I don’t think he does. But because we are not in a committed relationship, I can’t tell him not to.”

When Andy asked her if she thinks they will ever get married again, she responded with, “There’s a chance. There’s really a chance.”

Robyn and Juan Were Torn Apart by Infidelity

Robyn went on to explain that the men of the NBA have trouble saying no to flings, adding that a woman had come forward about sleeping with Juan while he was married to Robyn

“The woman kind of revealed herself, but he had been unfaithful before,” Robyn said. “I hate to say it, but professional athletes … they get it. And I kind of turned a blind eye.”

When it came to the topic of Ashley’s gossiping about Robyn and Juan’s financial hardships, the former Miss District of Columbia apologized and said, “Do you think I enjoy making fun of someone’s financial hardship when I’ve been evicted and had to go to the food bank for food?”

Tensions Grow Over the Topic of Race

The next topic at hand was the ever-boiling subject of race and what being black really means to the ladies of Potomac. Katie started off the discussion, saying, “I don’t wake up in the morning and go, ‘How black am I feeling?’ That’s so dumb.” She then went on to say about the varying degrees of what it means to be biracial, “There’s no black person who’s married to another black person. It’s all mixed up.”

Gizelle called out Katie for Instagramming a photo of herself with an afro, saying, “You know you said something wrong. That’s why you posted the Jackson 5 afro.” Katie instantly responded to that accusation by labeling Gizelle and Robyn “Dumb and dumber.” The episode ended abruptly when Robyn said, “I want you to understand …” only to be aggressively interrupted by Katie, who said, “That you’re not biracial?”

Tell Us: Are Gizelle and Robyn right to get offended by Katie’s comments about race?

The Real Housewives of Potomac airs on Bravo Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
