Chet Hanks has a scene-stealing role on Netflix’s Running Point — but could his famous family make cameos?
During the Wednesday, April 15, premiere event for season 2, Chet, 35, agreed when Us Weekly suggested that his parents Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson — or brother Colin Hanks — make an appearance on the show.
The actor has portrayed Travis Bugg since the show premiered in 2025. Running Point, which returns April 23, follows Kate Hudson as a reformed party girl who gets the chance to prove herself when she is left in charge of her family’s pro basketball team.
“[Kate’s family] lives five minutes away from my parents, and Kate used to have these awesome parties at her house where she would invite a bunch of people and play games, specifically Mafia,” Chet told Bustle in March 2025. “It makes it easier when you already have a rapport with someone.”
At the time, Chet recalled being surprised that the show’s creators — including Mindy Kaling — didn’t have him in mind when writing the part of Travis considering their similarities.
“It was the character description: Travis is the white point guard. He’s covered in tattoos. He’s a wannabe rapper, but he’s a huge liability because of the controversial s— he posts on social media,” Chet recalled. “I literally said to myself, ‘If I don’t get this role, I should just quit.’”
He added: “My dad’s an actor. My older brother’s an actor. My mom. This was the family business. So I [knew] that was something I would go into at some point.”
In addition to Chet’s family possibly appearing in a future season, executive producer David Stassen hinted that there have been discussions about Kurt Russell playing Hudson’s late onscreen dad.
“That’s a great idea. And it’s been balled about,” he told Us. “We’ve talked about it. If we ever do see him, we could not do better than Kurt Russell.”
Fellow EP Jeanie Buss was just as thrilled at the idea, saying, “Oh, that would be amazing. Are you kidding me? Like, that’s a good idea! I totally support that.”
Scott MacArthur, who plays Ness, joked that he “always thought” of Russell, 75, as his dad so the potential was perfect.
“So I’m all in,” she shared while Fabrizio Guido, who portrays Jackie, newcomer to the Gordon family — said he too would love to share the screen with Russell.
“I’ve been around, and I didn’t even think of that. Wow!” he noted while season 2 guest star Ken Marino added in his own interview with Us, “That’d be fantastic! Yes, that’s perfect. Get that out there!”
Running Point returns April 23 on Netflix.
