Putting their most fabulous feet forward! RuPaul’s Drag Race closed out its eighth season at the legendary Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, May 16, as Naomi Smalls, Kim Chi and Bob the Drag Queen duked it out for the Next Drag Superstar crown. Read the recap to see which drag star struts away with the title!
Who Is America’s Next Drag Superstar?
Keep it 100, ladies! Initially unsure of who to bestow the season’s highest honor upon, RuPaul had the queens perform one final lip sync showdown. It was — in a word — fierce! There was even more to behold, however, as Ru sat down with the finalists to talk about their journey, introduced contenders from past seasons and even squeezed in appearances by Margaret Cho — initially appearing as North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il — who wished Kim Chi luck; legendary actress Carol Channing, who thanked Bob the Drag Queen for her humorous impersonation of her earlier in the season; and even Queen Cersei herself, Lena Headey from HBO’s Game of Thrones, who told Naomi Smalls to “Cersei that walk."
Oh, and Nancy Grace also showed up to give props to Acid Betty, who sashayed away earlier in the season. How’s that for an endorsement!
In the end, Ru presented the crown and scepter to Bob the Drag Queen. In addition to the honor of America’s Next Drag Superstar, she also took home a $100,000 cash prize and a one-year supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics.
Miss Congeniality Goes to …
Last season’s Miss Congeniality, Katya Zamolodchikova, stopped by to pass along the honor to this year’s winner: Cynthia Lee Fontaine! Fontaine recently went public with her cancer diagnosis, a battle that did nothing to take away from her popularity this season. You go, girl!
