Since The Secret Life of the American Teenager came to an end, the cast has made rare comments about the ups and downs they faced when it came to the show.

The ABC Family drama, which ran from 2008 to 2013, was created by Brenda Hampton after the success of 7th Heaven. The Secret Life of the American Teenager followed teenager Amy (Shailene Woodley) as she experienced pregnancy and parenthood while also struggling with everything that comes from being a high school student.

“When I signed onto Secret Life, I read [three] episodes and I signed a contract for six years,” Woodley told Bustle in 2020. “[Those episodes] all hit home. I had friends in high school who were pregnant. It felt like everything that I wanted to be sending into the world.”

The actress recalled feeling “stuck” on the show after it took a larger pro-abstinence message.

“To this day it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Woodley added about reconciling the show’s conservative message with her own beliefs.

In addition to Woodley, The Secret Life of the American Teenager also starred Megan Park, Ken Baumann, India Eisley, Greg Finley, Daren Kagasoff, Francia Raisa, Molly Ringwald and Steve Schirripa.

“There were a lot of things that were written into the scripts that not just me, but a lot of the cast, disagreed with,” Woodley told Bustle in 2020 of the show’s story lines when it came to sex and abstinence. “There were belief systems that were pushed that were different than my own. Yet legally I was stuck there.”

Woodley said her experience with the show inspired her more adult roles after, adding, “Being on Secret Life propelled me to be more vocal about my own belief systems.”

She continued: “I lost my virginity like seven times on screen! I lost my own virginity in a really unromantic, unsexy way, [so] it’s very therapeutic for me that by playing these characters I was showing young women what they can wait for.”

Megan Park

“It was such a different time [when I filmed The Secret Life] so it’s hard to compare that and [my new show Sterling Point] because it was truly a different era,” Park exclusively told Us in August 2026. “There were so many wonderful things that came out of that show.”

Park expressed gratitude for her best friend Woodley, who led the cast with her role as Amy.

“Still to this day, she is my ride or die,” Park noted. “And it was such a wonderful cast. All those people I’m still really close with.”

She continued: “And I learned a lot about just being on a set and what everyone’s role is and getting so comfortable on a set. But it was a very different kind of show to make.”

While on an August 2026 episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Ringwald played a game where she ranked her past projects. She asked if “the worst is one” before giving the ABC Family drama that spot.

“OK, that was it. The worst,” she said, which shocked Cohen and the audience.

Ringwald clarified why The Secret Life of the American Teenager was at the bottom of the list, adding, “It was a hard, I mean … OK, I love the cast. I love Shailene [Woodley].”

She continued: “There was one person that was really difficult. And I’m not gonna say who that one person is, [but] they brought it down to a one.”
