Kit and Lauren’s relationship was the focus of Ransom Canyon‘s second season — but what happened to those adorable kittens?
During season 2, streaming now on Netflix, Kit (Casey W. Johnson) and Lauren (Lizzy Greene) explored the potential of their palpable chemistry despite her relationship with his brother, Lucas (Garrett Wareing).
One bonding aspect of Kit and Lauren’s budding relationship centered on a stray cat the eldest Russell kept in Lucas’ room. It turned out the cat was pregnant and gave birth to kittens, which Kit and Lauren looked after together.
“That was probably the best part of the season,” Johnson, 31, exclusively told Us about the sweet cast addition. “We got a lot of time with the cats and they were up for adoption. At least two of them got adopted from the crew.”
He continued, “I was definitely tempted because I would love to have a cat and they were very cute and they’re all very sweet. I’m glad someone got a couple of them.”
Us can confirm that the kittens were up for adoption at Best Friends Animal Society. The Ransom Canyon crew ended up adopting the entire group, with creator April Blair calling her kitten Tater Tot in honor of Wareing’s nickname for the show’s costume designer.
Megan Stone, the line producer assistant, named her kitten Gracie, after the show’s dance hall. Sheila Trujillo from the makeup department adopted a kitten that was renamed to Ransom while Alyssa Robinson from the props team brought home two of the orange kittens.
The only cast member who was left out was Wareing, 24. Despite his love for cats, Wareing didn’t get to film with the animals because his character Lucas wasn’t as thrilled by the idea of a furry friend taking residence inside his closet.
“Stop. I can’t talk about it,” he quipped to Us. “I am such a cat guy. I was so sad I wasn’t on set that day.”
In his disappointment, Wareing said he attempted to find the positive.
“I will say that April took home one of those kittens from set and now he is her pride and joy!” he explained. “Maybe it was a good thing I wasn’t on set that day … because I would’ve come home with a few too many prides and joys of my own.”
Based on Jodi Thomas‘ book series about a town that is full of drama, romance and hope, Ransom Canyon premiered in April 2025 and introduced Us to the locals of Texas Hill Country. Josh Duhamel‘s character, Staten, was grieving two major losses in season 1 while navigating his undeniable connection with childhood friend Quinn (Minka Kelly), who also caught the eye of Staten’s brother-in-law and love triangle rival Davis (Eoin Macken).
There was also Yancy (Jack Schumacher), who had a past he was hiding from Ellie (Marianly Tejada). Viewers found themselves further invested in a love triangle between high school students Lucas (Wareing), Lauren (Greene) and Reid (Andrew Liner).
Ahead of season 2, news broke that Macken and Liner, who played father and son Davis and Reid, respectively, would not be returning as series regulars. Steve Howey, meanwhile, joined in a recurring guest star role as Staten’s half brother, Levi.
Patricia Clarkson, Ben Robson, Heidi Engerman, Tatanka Means, Justin Johnson Cortez, Philip Winchester, Jennifer Ens, Brett Cullen and Niko Guardado are also featured heavily in season 2.
