The Pitt fans are still mourning Supriya Ganesh‘s exit as Dr. Samira Mohan, but the show has seemingly already found the character who will receive more screen time amid her absence in season 3.

News broke in April that Ganesh won’t be reprising her role when the hit HBO Max series returns for season 3. It was reported that Ganesh’s departure was due to the story being told on screen, but she has yet to break her silence.

Ayesha Harris‘ role as Dr. Parker Ellis, meanwhile, was elevated after she previously worked on the night shift. There were numerous scenes in seasons 1 and 2 that touched on how Ellis fit in at the ER, but that will be exponentially expanded in season 3.

HBO Max’s hit series, which premiered in January 2025, follows a group of employees at a fictional Pittsburgh hospital’s ER working a single 15-hour shift. The series is led by Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dana (Katherine LaNasa), Dr. Mohan (Ganesh), Dr. McKay (Fiona Dourif), Dr. King (Taylor Dearden), Dr. Santos (Isa Briones), Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell) and Javadi (Shabana Azeez).

Tracy Ifeachor‘s exit was just as surprising when she was written off before season 2. Us Weekly confirmed at the time that Ifeachor would not return as Heather Collins in season 2, with a source revealing that it was always the plan for Ifeachor’s character — who was a fourth-year resident in the first season — to move on with her career.

The insider noted that Ifeachor “didn’t choose to leave the show” and wasn’t aware of “any doors being closed” on a possible return. Ifeachor seemed to have a different outlook while speaking to Us months later.

“It was just such a joy and a pleasure to play Dr. Heather Collins and to know that my character has been so phenomenally well-received. It just blew me away,” Ifeachor told Us in September 2025. “I don’t know where she will be on the weekend of next season, but I know where I’m going to be, which is on my next project, which is just so amazing. But I take the lessons that I’ve learned from playing Dr. Heather Collins — playing this character who goes through such a traumatic event and still shows up every day for other people.”

She continued: “[No one] stops to ask if she’s OK, if she needs time out, if she needs to run away. I think as a woman, sometimes we carry a lot of emotional labor without even knowing it. I’ve learned that through this character, so I wouldn’t change that. This experience has been so life-changing, really.”

Before her exit was confirmed, Ganesh told Us in February that she was “curious” where Mohan would be when season 3 began, noting, “It’s up to the writers. Let’s see where they end up taking her. I think we left her in a really interesting spot. I’m really curious where she ends up going.”

Wyle, for his part, defended the narrative choice.

“It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show, because as writers we’re hard-pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically,” he told Variety at PaleyFest’s screening of The Pitt in April.

The actor elaborated on writing out Ganesh’s character, adding, “Emergency rooms have a high revolving door. As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the story lines fresh, but obviously Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning.”

He concluded: “Dr. Mohan is a beloved character, and I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors, and we’re going to miss her.”

The season 2 finale of The Pitt premieres on HBO Max Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.
