Alcohol is coming to Disneyland after more than 60 years of teetotalism! The beloved theme park in Anaheim, California, announced it will start serving alcoholic beverages in 2019.
Oga’s Cantina at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will serve “pilots, bounty hunters, smugglers, locals and galactic travelers alike,” Walt Disney Imagineering portfolio creative executive Scott Trowbridge said in a statement shared on the Disney Parks Blog on Thursday, August 30.
“Oga’s Cantina is the kind of establishment that attracts some of the most interesting and disreputable characters in the galaxy. And you never know when a stormtrooper or a familiar face will show up,” the statement continued. “Patrons of the cantina come from across the galaxy to sample the famous concoctions created with exotic ingredients using ‘otherworldly’ methods, served in unique vessels. With choices for kids and libations for adults, the cantina will make for a great stop!”
Trowbridge said the establishment will be run by “an intriguing alien proprietor” named Oga Garra. Music will be supplied by RX-24, the former StarSpeeder 3000 pilot that Disney fans have grown to love from the Star Tours ride.
At the moment, the only place at Disneyland that sells alcohol is the private Club 33 in the New Orleans Square section. The elite club is for members only, has a years-long waiting list and costs tens of thousands of dollars to join.
Some Twitter users were not happy with the decision to start serving alcohol at the park, with many noting that the late Walt Disney was adamant about guests having a child-friendly experience. One user wrote, “The last thing I want to see is some drunk a–hole stumbling around the Magic Kingdom.”
