Talk about a memorable proposal! Evan Wilt popped the question to girlfriend Haley Byrd on Wednesday, July 4, asking for her hand in marriage by sticking the ring inside a Kit Kat bar he had 3D printed for the special occasion.

While the proposal itself was enough to generate some chatter, Wilt’s method of asking for Byrd’s hand in marriage takes on added meaning given the couple’s hilarious backstory.

On May 31, Byrd tweeted a photo of a Kit Kat after Wilt had tried one of the candy bars for the first time. Instead of breaking off a rectangular piece, as the Kit Kat jingle suggests, Wilt bit into the entire bar and ate a portion of each piece. “‘I don’t think I’ve ever had a Kit Kat before,’ my boyfriend remarks before doing THIS, Byrd tweeted along with the photo of the demolished Kit Kat.

Within hours, Byrd’s tweet had thousands of comments, with many social media users even encouraging her to dump Wilt on account of his Kit Kat-eating style. “Break up with him at once,” demanded CNN anchor Jake Tapper.

But little did Byrd know, Wilt had something up his sleeve after Kit Kat reached out to him following his then-girlfriend’s viral tweet. Together with Hershey’s – the producers of Kit Kat – Wilt created a custom Kit Kat ring box to use as part of his proposal and printed it with help from a 3D printer. He then got down on one knee at the National Arboretum in Washington D.C.

“Haley is truly one of a kind and I knew I wanted to do something special for the proposal,” Wilt tells Us Weekly. “When Kit Kat reached out, I saw this as an opportunity to create an unforgettable moment.”

“I had no idea the proposal was coming that day,” adds Byrd, who playfully tweeted that her fiancé still doesn’t know how to eat a Kit Kat. “When I saw the Kit Kat box, I just started laughing. It was such a neat experience, and I am beyond grateful that Evan put so much thought into it.”

After Byrd accepted the proposal, Wilt even showed her the 3D model he used to pop the question. “It’s a little surreal to think about all of the kind of people who were working on our engagement behind the scenes,” Byrd explains to Us, noting Hershey’s even supplied a Kit Kat cake for the celebratory occasion. “The whole situation just highlights Evan’s wonderful creativity and willingness to laugh at himself. I’m so thankful he’s in my life.”

And even though he was the butt of the joke just a few weeks ago, the proposal couldn’t have gone any better. Explains Wilt: “We’re both very happy how everything turned out, but we’re even more excited to tie the knot in the near future.”
