Prince William is aware he needs to step up his game in the kitchen! The Duke of Cambridge stepped out in London on Wednesday, February 13, to lend a hand in preparing meals for the homeless, and poked fun at his cooking skills, or lack thereof.
During William’s visit to The Passage – a UK-based resource center for “homeless and vulnerable people,” – the 36-year-old royal diced some carrots and cooked spaghetti bolognese alongside several volunteers. Apparently the group was working on a tight schedule, because at one point, the future king of England worried they were running out of time.
“Are we meant to get through this before 12’o clock?” William asked a fellow volunteer, according to a video clip shared on Twitter from royal reporter Richard Palmer. “We’ve got 10 minutes to do all this.”
The royal then simultaneously outed himself as a fan of The Great British Bake-Off while being self-deprecating about his own abilities in the kitchen. “I feel like Mary Berry’s going to pop out in a minute and tell us we’re being too slow,” he quipped, referencing one of the competition show’s judges.
Questionable culinary prowess aside, it sounds like William will be visiting The Passage frequently in the future. Kensington Palace revealed that, as of Wednesday, he is now a royal patron of the organization, which he first visited with his mother, Princess Diana, in 1993.
“The visits I made as a child to this place left a deep and lasting impression upon me – about how important it is to ensure that everyone in our society, especially the poorest, are treated with respect, dignity and kindness, and are given the opportunities to fulfill their potential in life,” William said in a statement.
Added the charity’s chief executive, Mick Clarke: “During His Royal Highness’ visits to The Passage, it has been very clear that he has a deep concern for those affected by homelessness and a real interest in our work. For His Royal Highness to further express his support for The Passage’s work by becoming our Royal Patron is a tremendous honor, and a testament to how much he genuinely cares about this issue.”
