Soccer star Ashlyn Harris gushed that she’s “the happiest I’ve ever been” in her relationship with her girlfriend, Sophia Bush — and she’s not afraid to show it off.
“As much as I protect that, I also don’t want to silence it,” Harris, 40, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting her new documentary, Gamechangers: The Ashlyn Harris Story. “When we walk into a room, when we’re in our house, when we’re on the couch, we can’t keep our hands off of each other. I love it, because I just love her with every inch of my being.”
She continued, “And I don’t have to question that love. I don’t have to ask for that love. I can just be in it. To be still and to be at peace and to feel this happiness. Why wouldn’t I want to share that? I want to explode. I think anyone who shares space with us can see that in 30 seconds. It’s not performative. But when you sit in this type of abundance of happiness and joy, I want to scream it on the rooftop.”
Harris and Bush, 43, started dating in October 2023, the month after the former Team USA star filed for divorce from her wife of nearly four years, fellow soccer player Ali Krieger. Bush filed for divorce from her ex-husband, Grant Hughes, after 13 months of marriage in August 2023. The couple finalized their divorce in January 2025.
“I think what people see is two people who have kind of had it really hard and they found each other,” Harris said of her relationship with Bush. “It took a long time. We’ve been chasing and trying and doing all of the work.”
Harris and Bush are also “coparenting” the two children that Harris shares with Krieger: daughter Sloane, 5, and son Ocean, 3.
“Now we just get to be at ease and happy and in love and raise these kids in this family,” Harris said. “We’re just so grateful and lucky. I don’t want to censor that.”
In her new documentary, Harris grapples with carving out her identity in the aftermath of her divorce and her playing career, which she described as “a really weird place to be.”
“I had to do some real work and it’s not easy,” she told Us. “Life is full of hardship and grief. [The documentary] is really a love letter to myself. I’m so proud of the bravery just to drop it. Unfortunately I’m going to hurt some people in this process, but it’s time to choose me.”
