A new investigation revealed that the University of Michigan allegedly knew about former head coach Sherrone Moore’s relationship with staff member Paige Shiver for more than a year before Moore was terminated.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel wrote a handwritten note about Moore, 40, and Shiver, 32, in August 2024, two days before Moore’s first game as head coach, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal published on Tuesday, July 14.
“I told him I didn’t remember if we had already discussed, but that she couldn’t accompany him on trips,” Manuel, 58, allegedly wrote.
The report alleged that Moore and Shiver’s relationship began on a recruiting trip in 2022, while Moore was still an assistant coach. Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli, since July 2015 and the couple share three daughters.
Text messages between Moore and Shiver were uncovered by the Wall Street Journal, illustrating that Shiver sought treatment at a hospital for postpartum depression after having an abortion in the summer of 2022.
During an interview with Good Morning America in April, Shiver revealed she had been pregnant with Moore’s baby. She terminated the pregnancy after being told the unborn child was diagnosed with Pompe disease, a genetic disorder that weakens muscle strength.
According to Shiver, Moore was aware of the pregnancy and supported her having the abortion.
Shiver allegedly sought the assistance of then-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh for treatment, though she told Moore that Harbaugh, 62, “doesn’t know everything and won’t.”
Us Weekly reached out to the University of Michigan for comment on the Wall Street Journal’s report.
Moore was terminated by the University of Michigan in December 2025, after Shiver presented details about their relationship.
In a radio interview on Tuesday, Manuel alleged that the university was not aware of Shiver’s relationship with Moore until Shiver came forward.
“If there’s no evidence, there’s no evidence,” Manuel said on WTKA-AM. “All we can do is look for the evidence that exists.”
Shortly after being fired, Moore allegedly broke into Shiver’s apartment and threatened to take his own life in front of her.
Moore was arrested on the same day of his firing and charged with felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking and misdemeanor breaking and entering. All three of those charges were eventually dropped.
In March, Moore pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of malicious use of a telecommunications device in context of a domestic relationship and trespassing. He was sentenced to 18 months of probation.
