Boise State University play-by-play broadcaster Garrett Jones asked for “prayers” while revealing his unborn daughter, Landry, has a “rare birth defect.”

“I’m not quite sure how to even begin this post, but I will start by sharing that we were not planning on finding out the gender of our baby until birth, unless something came up on our anatomy scan that was worrisome,” Jones wrote in a statement via X on Tuesday, October 27. “Well, it’s a girl, Landry Hix Jones 🩷and with that comes an update that I am very pained to share, but we need all the prayer we can get.”

Jones explained that his daughter, who is expecting with his wife, Sarah, has been diagnosed with a partial Pentalogy of Cantrell, described by the National Institutes of Health as “a collection of congenital malformations involving the heart, pericardium, diaphragm, sternum, and ventral abdominal wall.”

“As we learn more about this condition, we understand that genetic factors can play a role in the outcome after birth,” Jones said. “I was able to get some genetic testing done, and very soon more tests will be needed for Landry herself. We are hopeful that since Landry is still so small, that we will learn more in the upcoming weeks about her development as she continues, and we will continue to update when we are comfortable doing so 🤍.”

Jones explained that a cardiologist was “able to confirm that her heart looks great and is inside her body.”

“Our sweet Landry is so loved, and we are grateful for our time with her, no matter what,” he continued. “There is definitely hope of our sweet baby girl living a somewhat normal life, but right now she is with us, and that’s what matters most. But more than anything, we just need a prayer. We need a miracle here. We’re not giving up hope yet.”

The sports commentator added, “Pray for a miracle, that she is not in any pain, and our doctors know exactly how to proceed. That our hearts would be ready to love our sweet girl.”

Jones acknowledged that he and his wife have “a very long road” ahead of them as they prepare for their next steps.

“But we are so incredibly grateful for our people,” he wrote. “I have never been so scared and confused in my entire life, but I know our sweet Landry is a fighter, and we will continue to fight for her no matter what 🤍.”

Jones began working at Boise State in October 2024, where he is the radio voice of Broncos women’s basketball and does play-by-play duties for men’s basketball, volleyball, softball and soccer.
