Erin Andrews suffered through a rather unfortunate sideline incident during the recent Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers football game.
“I had also a learning experience for me, and I puked and crapped down my leg for my halftime hit, which I’m frustrated about,” Andrews, 48, confessed on the Tuesday, October 27, episode of her “Calm Down” podcast. “It still tells me I love my job. I need to get better. I’m still learning things.”
Andrews was covering the Sunday, October 25, Lions and Packers’ matchup for Fox Sports when she struggled to get her words out properly during her halftime report. (The Lions ultimately triumphed, 20-17.)
“I couldn’t speak,” she quipped, noting she was out of breath from running across the sidelines to gather the proper updates on players’ mid-game injuries. “I said, ‘Kev, I’ll get it together at some point.’ … It gives me chest pain, and then I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, how many people are watching and I just s*** down my leg?’ I’m so much better than that.”
According to Andrews, her sideline mishap earned pity from her colleagues.
“I thought it was good, but then I blanked out. Then, I remember I was going to go [say], ‘This is what he liked about the first half.’ And then I was thinking, ‘No, the most important thing was that they didn’t kick the field goal,’” the sportscaster recalled. “I say something like, ‘He’s mad at himself because they didn’t kick the field goal. He liked what he was doing, but then Detroit was able to stop it.’ And I said, ‘And now about the offense.’”
Andrews continued, “Then I tried to go, ‘Um, you know what, Kev?’ I see them snap the ball. You’re supposed to stop talking when they snap the ball in case there’s a fumble, an interception, somebody gets hurt. You don’t want to talk over your play-by-play.”
As Andrews was admittedly “panicking” about her on-camera blunder, she heard Tom Brady’s live reaction in her earpiece.
“Tom Brady, on air, goes, ‘Aw’,” she said. “He does that on air because he knew that I was struggling.”
Andrews has since taken lessons from the incident to apply in future games.
“That’s on me. I should have said, ‘Have [Tom] Rinaldi go first. I’m still trying to gather info,’” she acknowledged podcast cohost Charissa Thompson. “Here’s you and I, I can do it all. I just had a four-minute conversation with Matt LaFleur, I am now relistening to information [and] I should have just said, ‘Hey guys, give me a beat.’ So, that’s a great learning [lesson].”
