Irish Olympian Ciara Mageean has died. She was 34.

“At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones,” a Sunday, November 1, statement shared to Mageean’s official Instagram page read, announcing the Olympic veteran’s death. “A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.”

Mageean, a track star who represented Ireland in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, was diagnosed with stage IV bowel cancer in 2025.

“It’s been a lot to take in, but I’ve already started treatment,” she wrote via Instagram in July 2025, publicly disclosing her diagnosis for the first time. “I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by the love and support of my family and close friends.”

She continued “Right now, my focus is on healing and taking things one day at a time. I kindly ask that you respect my privacy and that of my loved ones as we move through this together. Your understanding means more than I can say. Thank you for the love and strength. I’m ready to face this with the same fight I’ve always brought to the track.”

Mageean is survived by her parents, her sister and her husband, Tommy Moran, all of whom had tirelessly been by her side throughout her cancer battle. (Mageean and Moran said “I do” in October, weeks before the athlete’s untimely death.)

“I was sitting in that room with Thomas and Máire, my big sister, who came with me. My colorectal surgeon told me it was stage IV,” Mageean recalled of her diagnosis during a June interview with Ireland’s RTE. “[I was told] the cancer was in my bowel and was quite significant in my bowel. It had spread to my liver and was quite significant in my liver, and there was a small amount in my lungs.”

She added at the time, “Me and Tommy sat in the car basically in a stunned silence and just began to cry. For the next few days, it was rough, very emotional, [and] really unknown in terms of ‘Will I die in the next few months? Will I die in the next few years? Do I have longer?’”

After coming to terms with her diagnosis, Mageean was determined to fight the illness with all her might.

“I’m young and fit and healthy, I have no comorbidities, I can fight this,” she stated to the Irish outlet. “It’s a strange mix of determination that I’m not going to let this cancer win but the sheer dread that the grim reaper was right behind me.”
