Former Jackson State University football star Levi Wyatt has died after a dramatic car crash in Mississippi. He was 23.
Wyatt’s Chevrolet Camaro struck a utility pole just before midnight on Friday, July 31, according to local reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
When police arrived, they observed another vehicle which had sustained damage in the accident. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
The Mississippi Highway Control is investigating the accident.
“The bond of this brotherhood does not end when the game clock expires,” Jackson State football said in a statement following Wyatt’s death. “Today, we mourn the loss of our brother, Levi Wyatt. His memory will forever live within the halls of Jackson State football and in the hearts of everyone who shared this journey with him. We ask the Tiger Nation to join us in lifting his family and loved ones in prayer during this incredibly difficult time. Rest easy, Tiger.”
Wyatt, a defensive back, transferred to Jackson State from McNeese State in December 2024.
Marquel Price, a former teammate of Wyatt’s at McNeese, remembered his friend being “filled with energy and so much positivity.”
“I’m lost for words man, I’m lost,” Price shared via Facebook on Sunday, August 2. “My arms wrapped around your entire family. We needed more like you, the people loved you dog you tearing me apart 💔. You know your brothers got you forever, never will I ever forget anything you ever told me, it’ll always be love from me to your family 2, I love you always, until I see you again man damn 💔!”
A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Wyatt’s collegiate career started at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
“We all miss him and we love him to death, and it is just really sad that someone like Levi put a lot of energy into college and college football, and it was ended before the world was able to see it,” MGCCC head coach Jack Wright told WAPT in a story published on Monday, August 3. “With him being a former quarterback in high school, he just had some natural leadership ability to him. I have seen hundreds of pictures of him over the last few days and in every one of those pictures, he had a smile or a smirk on his face. If you know Levi, this is just who he is. He was going to try to charm his way out of stuff.”
A memorial service for Wyatt is being held at the Vicksburg City Auditorium on Sunday, August 9.
