Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died. He was 29.

Clarke died on Monday, May 11, according to TMZ Sports. The cause of his death is unknown, however NBC 4 Los Angeles reported on Tuesday that the death is being investigated as a possible drug overdose.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the Grizzlies said in a Tuesday statement released via social media. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

“We are all beyond devastated by the passing of Brandon Clarke,” the agency’s statement read. “He was so loved by all of us here, and everyone whose life he touched. He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family. Our hearts are so broken as we think about his mom, Whitney, his entire family, and all of his friends and teammates. From high school to San Jose State to Gonzaga to the Grizzlies, Brandon impacted everyone who was part of his life.”

The statement continued, “Everyone loved BC because he was always there as the most supportive friend you could ever imagine. He was so unique in the joy he brought to all of those in his life. It’s just impossible to put into words how much he’ll be missed. We love you, BC.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement about Clarke’s death on Tuesday, saying the league was “devastated” to learn the news.

“As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit,” Silver, 64, said. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”

Following a collegiate career at San Jose State and Gonzaga, Clarke played all seven seasons of his NBA career with Memphis, though he was limited to only two games during the 2025-26 season due to injuries.

In 309 games, Clarke averaged 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2020.

Clarke was arrested on April 1, charged with speeding and possession of a controlled substance after leading police on a high-speed chase. The case was still open at the time of Clarke’s death.

Last year, Clarke established the Brandon Clarke Foundation, which gave back to local Memphis charities with an emphasis on youth literacy.
